Statement: Zachary considers himself to be an artist before a human, hence the name he signs with, xAx. Though he attended the Colorado Institute of Art in 1995 to study multimedia graphic design, he took to most art mediums intuitively, and is mostly self-taught. Once he tried pointillism with pen and ink in 1991, he found the medium that was most addictive and meditative for him. After 15 years of honing this craft, he decided to experiment with drawing his circles and stipples digitally on the computer with a stylus. Come 2012, Zachary started drawing on an iPad, and realized that this was more comfortable and enjoyable for him than the other means. Zachary chooses images to render that are either “pop” in their nature, or may be enigmatic, yet subjective enough that whomever sees it derives their own connection to it.
Zachary’s process is to choose an image, overlay a geometric pattern over the image to separate his stipples and circles, then grab the stylus and plug away at building the image molecularly one circle at a time.
Zachary was also co-founder of the successful DenverArtists.com website from 2005-2015, a free online directory of artists and art resources. Nearly 900 artists had signed up and started their own online galleries in that 10 year span. He currently lives in Brighton with his lovely wife and best friend, Regina Reece, working as Public information & Marketing Manger for the City of Brighton.
