Statement:
Assemblage has an immediacy of use coupled with built-in character derived from an object's unique design/texture/patinas formed from use or abandonment to elements, plus importantly, the mental association with its iconography. The story behind a used object adds depth and weight to my narrative, whether I amplify its identity, or conversely, alter and deconstruct in order to decontextualize it. Transforming seemingly worthless elements into something valuable, is significantly different and more noble than the ethical value of recycling. I highly manipulate the recombination of parts so they're purposeful rather than serendipitous. Gestalt founder Kafka said, “The whole is other than the sum of the parts” which allows a story without use of words. I play with our compulsion to integrate parts into a whole & our penchant for attaching meaning to them. That dichotomous dancing on the fine line of acknowledging this need yet trying to defy its convention is intriguing. WEBSITE CONTACT MICHELLE |
